What ChatBase is

ChatBase is built around chatrooms rather than a feed of posts. You join a room, you see who is in it, and you talk. Messages arrive as they are sent, so a conversation feels like a conversation rather than a comment thread you check later.

It is open in a browser tab on a phone or a computer. There is nothing to download, and nothing to install. If you can open a website, you can use ChatBase.

How the rooms work

Public chatrooms are the heart of the site. Each room has a name, an icon and a short description, so you can tell what it is about before you join. The Lounge is the usual place to start, and the easiest place to say hello for the first time.

When a conversation is better with just one person, you can send a private message instead. You can reply to a particular message, send a picture, and decide who is allowed to write to you. Members you enjoy talking to can be added as friends, so you can find them again the next time you log in.

Your profile is yours to set up: an avatar, a short bio, a status line and a country, with as much or as little detail as you feel like sharing.

Keeping it friendly

A chat community only works if people feel comfortable speaking. That is why moderation is part of the platform rather than an afterthought. Moderators look after the rooms, a word filter catches disguised swearing, and every message can be reported from where it appears. Reports go to the people who can act on them, and the people who keep breaking the rules can be warned, muted or removed.

There is a short set of chat rules that applies to everyone, and the same terms of service apply to every member.

Who it is for

ChatBase is for anyone who likes talking to people they have not met yet: someone with a niche hobby and nobody to talk about it with, someone learning a language who wants to practise with real people, or someone who just wants a bit of company in the evening.

You do not need a following, a camera or a hot take. A username and something to say is enough.

Free, and in your browser

Joining is free. Rooms, private messages, friends and profiles are all part of the same account. The site works on phones and computers, in light or dark, and keeps your place while you are logged in.
